RESORT TIME
Play some tennis on Allenberry's har-tru courts or enjoy a walk around the property's 57 acres. The Yellow Breeches Creek, which runs along the property, is nationally renowned for its fly fishing. Take a seat creek side on a stone bench and lazily spend the day watching fishermen in their waders cast their rods.
THE PLAY'S THE THING
If madcap farces and Broadway Musicals are your thing, purchase tickets at the front desk for the performance of a Broadway show, performed at the Allenberry Playhouse.
A REAL-LIFE STARS HOLLOW
Just down the hill from Allenberry is the historic village of Boiling Springs. Take an easy stroll around the lake and visit the Village Artisans Gallery on Third Avenue.
TAKE A HIKE
Off the road between Allenberry and Boiling Springs, you'll find the entrance to the Appalachian Trail. The Mid-Atlantic Field offices are located in Boiling Springs, so you can get a map and learn about the history of the trail before setting off. Pick out a nice walking stick and hike a few of it's 2,160 miles.
CHEAP EATS
Half a mile down the road is Anile's Restorante & Pizzeria in Boiling Springs. About five miles northwest of Boiling Springs is the town of Carlisle. Fay's Country Kitchen is a Heinze-family favorite for brunch. After you stuff yourself with fluffy omelets, toasted blueberry muffins, and well-done hash browns and then perk up with some coffee (all for less than five bucks), you're ready to go antiquing in downtown Carlisle.
WHAT TO WEAR
Eight miles northeast of Allenberry in Mechanicsburg. Need a pair of clogs? Try Just Clogs. Searching for that perfect vintage dress? Stop in at Fairy Godmother, a great secondhand thrift shop (although you should call in advance because of their irregular business hours).
BACK IN TIME
For those early risers with a more ambitious historically minded agenda, the battlefields of Gettysburg lie waiting for you 40 miles to the south. It's easy to spend an entire day there, so keep your eye on the time - we don't want you to miss the Broadway Show at Allenberry.
For directions or more information about any of these places, check the front desk at Fairfield Hall. |
