Family to continue running Allenberry

John Heinze, 74, retired Aug. 1, 2009 after serving as president of Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse since 1967.

His brother Jere Heinze, 65, the resort’s current general manager, will be named president, and Jere’s son, Charles A.B. Heinze II, 36, will be promoted from food and beverage director to general manager.

However, it is Charles Heinze who will be moving into his uncle’s vacated office, Jere Heinze said, as the family continues the transition to its third and fourth generation of leadership.

We provide a unique setting for our guests to come and relax, eat, and be entertained. We also provide a great experience for many talented people who want to come here to work, whether in the theatre or in the restaurant. There is no place in the world like Allenberry.

Jere Heinze - who grew up on the property and lives there with his wife, Diane - has served as Allenberry’s general manager since 1980 and is responsible for turning the summer resort into a year-round business.

As president, he hopes to build residential homes on Allenberry’s 57 acres.
The family has been working for the past decade on The Breeches at Allenberry project - 128 homes and duplex units on 60 acres east of the facility. Connected to Allenberry by golf cart paths and walking paths, the development is targeted towards the 55-and-over crowd.

We have a lot of demand here. We’ve had a lot of requests from our longtime customers who’d like to retire along the Yellow Breeches. Allenberry has received the necessary approvals for the project and signed a contract with a “national developer”. But about six months ago, he said, that developer pulled out due to the poor economy. “When the economy changes and the environment changes a little bit, we’re perfectly positioned to develop what we think will be a premiere senior living arrangement”.

Proud history In 1944, Charles A.B. Heinze purchased the private estate known as Allenberry and transformed it into a resort. When the property was incorporated in 1967, his oldest son, John, was named the first president of Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse. Over his 42 years as president, John Heinze made many changes at the resort - streamlining operations and adding buildings, a fine dining facility and tennis courts.

In 60 years, the Allenberry theatre has had only two producers, John and his father. With this transition, Jere Heinze will be come the third producer. The Heinzes have often appeared on stage through the years. In his retirement, John Heinze said he plans to travel and play golf with his wife, Kathy. A staunch supporter of Penn State, he also plans to spend time in State College, as well as visiting his two daughters, Cricket and Jackie, who live in New York and Los Angeles, respectively.

Jere Heinze & Charles A.B. Heinze IIJere Heinze created Allenberry’s Murder Mystery Weekends and commissioned the original Christmas shows at the theatre. He is “proud” to be working alongside his son. Meanwhile, fourth-generation family members are working as lifeguards and in the kitchen. It’s wonderful to know that this business my father started will remain Heinze-family operated, and I am eager to have Allenberry pass through many generations of Heinzes to come.

Charles A.B. Heinze II In 2005, Charles A.B. Heinze II returned to Allenberry to serve as its food and beverage director. Prior to that, he held management positions at the Loews L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C., the Tavern Restaurant in State College and at both the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans and Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas Resort. Charles Heinze returned to Allenberry with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Charles III.

We are a family-run business, but all of our employees are also part of that family. All of our guests are part of that family. We are fortunate that we are able to host our guests in such a personable way, making sure they feel at home in this truly special setting.
